PREPARE FOR THE INTERVIEW
RESEARCH THE COMPANY BEFORE YOU GO ON THE INTERVIEW
- Research information on the company using reference material available on the internet or at the library. Basic points to know; what they do, size of the company, how long they’ve been in business, etc.
DRESS APPROPRIATELY AND CONSERVATIVELY
- Women are to wear a suit, dress, or a skirt and blouse with proper hosiery.
- Men are to wear a suit or sports jacket and dress slacks.
ALLOW PLENTY OF TRAVEL TIME
- Prepare your route ahead of time
- Arrive 5 to 10 minutes early.
WHEN FILLING OUT THE APPLICATION
- Fill out every part of the application; when questions do not apply, write n/a (not applicable.)
- Answer the question about desired salary with the word ‘open’ or ‘negotiable.’
- Be sure your handwriting is legible.
- Have a list of your dates of employment and work history
- Be prepared to list 3 Business references with addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses.
DURING YOUR INTERVIEW WITH THE EMPLOYER
- Turn off your cell phone or pager when on an interview.
- Shake hands firmly and smile when introduced.
- Maintain good eye contact throughout the interview.
- Answer all questions clearly and with complete sentences; avoid answering by yes or no.
- Avoid chewing gum, smoking, or drinking a beverage on an interview.
- State salary as ‘open’ or ‘negotiable’ when asked desired salary.
- Ask questions relating to the job, instead of questions about salary, vacation or other perks.
- Confidently explain why you think you are qualified for the job.
- At end of the interview; shake hands, smile, and thank the employer for the interview.
- Let the employer know that you are eager for the opportunity.
